چکیده
The great success of controlled radical polymerizations has encouraged researchers to develop more facile and robust approaches for surface-initiated (SIPs) fabricate polymer brushes, even non-experts. In recent years, external-stimuli-mediated polymerization methods have come the fore as SIPs because their less rigorous synthetic procedures high controllability, which expand opportunities synthesizing macromolecules with desired chemical compositions structures, well tailor-made polymers bioconjugates that show broad applicability physiological compatibility. This review discusses latest developments in methods, particular, external-stimuli mediated atom transfer (ATRP), photo-induced polymerizations, reversible addition-fragmentation chain (RAFT) polymerization, other combination application surface grafting. implementation these is interest due unique possibilities temporally control a process, fast straightforward environmentally benign features, lead established emerging applications biolubrication, antifouling, biosensing.

From Self-Assembled Monolayers to Coatings: Advances in the Synthesis and Nanobio Applications of Polymer Brushes
In this review, we describe the latest advances in synthesis, characterization, and applications of polymer brushes. Synthetic advances towards well-defined polymer brushes, which meet criteria such as: (i) Efficient and fast grafting, (ii) Applicability on a wide range of substrates; and (iii) Precise control of surface initiator concentration and hence, chain density are discussed. On the cha...
متن کاملSacrificial bonds in polymer brushes from rat tail tendon functioning as nanoscale velcro.
Polymers play an important role in many biological systems, so a fundamental understanding of their cross-links is crucial not only for the development of medicines but also for the development of biomimetic materials. The biomechanical movements of all mammals are aided by tendon fibrils. The self-organization and biomechanical functions of tendon fibrils are determined by the properties of th...
متن کاملShear of polymer brushes
We have measured the normal, lateral and hydrodynamic forces that act between polymer-brush-bearing surfaces immersed in a good-solvent medium, both when stationary and when in motion with respect to each other. At low sliding velocities we find a very marked decrease in the frictional force between the surfaces, an effect interpreted in terms of a fluid interfacial layer resulting from the non...
متن کاملConformational Transitions of Spherical Polymer Brushes: Synthesis, Characterization, and Theory
We examine the structure of densely grafted polymer layers grown from the surfaces of spherical nanoparticles over a broad range of graft densities and chain lengths. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments show that the hydrodynamic thickness of the polymer layer, h, scales as h N for short chains and high grafting densities, that is, in the concentrated polymer brush (CPB) regime, whereas ...
متن کاملSrongly Charged Polymer Brushes
– Charged polymer brushes are layers of surface-tethered chains. Experimental systems are frequently strongly charged. Here we calculate phase diagrams for such brushes in terms of salt concentration ns, grafting density and polymer backbone charge density. Electrostatic stiffening and counterion condensation effects arise which are absent from weakly charged brushes. In various phases chains a...
